FAQ

BJJ & Muay Thai questions Answered

Gi or No-Gi, jiu-jitsu or Muay Thai, kids classes and open mat: the questions people ask most about training at Peck BJJ & Muay Thai in Harlingen, TX.

The basics

Do you teach both BJJ and Muay Thai?

Yes. Peck BJJ & Muay Thai teaches both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai under one roof in Harlingen, for kids and adults. Jiu-jitsu classes run in both the Gi and No-Gi.

What’s the difference between BJJ and Muay Thai?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art: takedowns, controlling someone on the ground, and finishing with submissions like chokes and joint locks. Muay Thai is a striking art, fought standing up with punches, kicks, elbows and knees, plus the clinch.

They cover opposite ends of a fight, which is why many people train both. Here you can do that at one gym, often on the same night.

What’s the difference between Gi and No-Gi jiu-jitsu?

Gi jiu-jitsu is trained in the traditional kimono, and the collar, sleeves and pants can all be gripped, which makes the game slower and more technical. No-Gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts. With nothing to grab, it’s faster and closer to submission wrestling. Our schedule includes both every week.

Which martial art should I learn first?

There’s no wrong answer. If you’re drawn to grappling and working on the ground, start with jiu-jitsu. If you want to learn to punch and kick, start with Muay Thai. Plenty of people end up doing both. Not sure? Ask us.

Do you offer MMA or kickboxing classes?

Our schedule is built around Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. Muay Thai is a form of kickboxing, often called Thai boxing, and one of the main striking arts used in MMA, while jiu-jitsu covers the ground. For questions about MMA-specific training, contact us.

Classes & schedule

When are Gi and No-Gi classes?

On both the adult and kids schedules, jiu-jitsu is Gi on Mon, Wed, Fri and No-Gi on Tue, Thu, Sat. See the full schedule for times.

Can I train BJJ and Muay Thai on the same day?

Yes. Monday through Friday, adult Muay Thai runs 6:30–7:30 PM and adult jiu-jitsu follows at 7:30–8:30 PM. On Saturdays, Muay Thai at 10:30 AM leads into No-Gi jiu-jitsu at 11:30 AM and open mat at 12:30 PM.

What is open mat?

Open mat is less-structured mat time where you can drill techniques, roll (spar) and work on whatever you’ve been learning. Ours is on Saturdays, 12:30–1:30 PM, on the adult schedule.

Are there classes on Sunday?

No. Classes run Monday through Saturday on both the adult and kids schedules.
